Mulch Selection for the Gulf Coast Climate
Mulch choices matter more on Gulf Blvd than almost anywhere else in Florida. You're dealing with salt air that accelerates decomposition, summer storms that wash fine mulch off beds and into storm drains, and hurricane-force winds that turn loose mulch into a projectile. The right mulch type depends on your priorities.
Mulch Types We Install
- Eucalyptus mulch: Most common choice in Gulf Coast FL. Aromatic, good visual color retention, available in large quantities. Decomposes in about 12 months — plan for annual refresh. Moderate wind resistance.
- Pine bark nuggets: Larger pieces stay in place better than shredded mulch in wind and rain. Slightly acidic — a good match for acid-loving tropical plants like Ixora and Bougainvillea. Decomposes more slowly than eucalyptus.
- Rubber mulch: Best option for hurricane-prone properties and storm-resistant beds. Significantly heavier than organic mulch — won't blow in wind. Does not decompose, eliminating annual refresh cost. More expensive upfront but lowest long-term cost. Available in natural brown, black, or terra cotta colors.
Avoid cypress mulch: Most Florida landscape professionals refuse to specify it. Cypress mulch is sourced from harvesting Florida's bald cypress and pond cypress wetlands — threatened coastal ecosystems. It offers no performance advantage over eucalyptus and contributes to the destruction of wetlands that buffer Gulf Coast communities from storm surge.
The Volcano Mulching Problem
The most common mulching error on the Gulf Blvd corridor — and one we correct on almost every new property we service — is volcano mulching: piling mulch directly against plant stems and tree trunks in a cone shape. It looks dramatic. It destroys plants.
Mulch piled against a stem holds constant moisture against the bark, causing stem rot, crown rot, and fungal disease at the base of the plant. We always maintain a 2–4 inch clear zone around every plant base and tree trunk, regardless of what the previous landscaper did.
Salt-Tolerant Ground Covers for Gulf Blvd
Ground covers provide an alternative to mulch in beds under palms, along walkways, and in narrow strips where grass doesn't establish well. Salt-tolerant options that work on the Gulf Blvd corridor:
- Asiatic jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum): Dense, low-maintenance, tolerates moderate salt spray. Spreads slowly to fill beds completely. Good for shaded areas under palms.
- Perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata): FL-native, drought-tolerant, small yellow flowers. One of the best no-maintenance ground covers for full-sun Gulf Coast beds. Does not need mowing.
- Beach Sunflower (Helianthus debilis): Florida native, bright yellow flowers, highly salt-tolerant. Excellent for Gulf-front and near-beach properties.
- Lantana: Full sun, butterfly attractor, very salt-tolerant, drought-tolerant once established. Available in red, orange, yellow, and purple varieties.
- Mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus): Shade-tolerant, salt-tolerant, low-growing. Excellent under Sabal palms where nothing else will grow.
